WCF was one of a number of local businesses who pitched in to help the residents of Kirkby Lonsdale after their town was devastated by fire at the start of December 2024, which sadly saw one man lose his life. Just weeks before Christmas a huge fire took hold on one of the main shopping streets destroying buildings and forcing the closure of many shops and businesses at such a crucial trading time. As a result of the amazing efforts of emergency services, council officers and local people, the town was determined to open quickly but the impact of the sad events will be felt for many months to come. Cumbria Community Foundation launched the Kirkby Lonsdale
fire disaster recovery appeal, with the help of an initial £50,000 donation
from Westmorland and Furness Council. The appeal has been supported by
individuals, community groups, businesses, and charitable trusts and has raised
£87,500 to support 83 households impacted by the fire.
Jo Ritzema, Executive Chair, explained why WCF had decided
to support the appeal. She said: “Like many others we couldn’t fail to be moved
by the sad events in Kirkby Lonsdale, more poignant given the time of year. Our
customers live in rural communities and rely heavily on local services. It’s
important that we all support the town however we can to get back on its feet
to ensure its long-term success.”
